Breast augmentation, also known as mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enlarge and enhance their breast profile. The plastic surgeon has several options when deciding how to insert the implant. He or she can make an incision in the patient's armpit, around her areola, on the underside of the breast or through the navel. The surgeon then inserts the implant, silicone or saline, into the breast in one of three positions: behind the pectoral muscle (complete submuscular), within the pectoral muscle (partial submuscular) or in front of the pectoral muscle (subglandular). The placement of the implants often depends upon the patient's initial breast size and their desired implant size. Breast augmentation surgery typically takes two hours and has a recovery time of up to a week. The best candidates for breast augmentation are patients unhappy with their current body contour and who wish to obtain a different breast profile.
